These are some of the 54 Quesnel City Workers who are facing layoffs because of the political battle taking place between the City of Quesnel and the Cariboo Regional District over Sub regional Recreation Funding. The amount they are fighting over is only $54,000, in the 2004 budget, and could end up causing the Twin Arenas and the Arts and Recreation Center to be closed in 90 days.
These are the same Employees, who only one month ago were commended for providing excellent service to the public, this the result of a survey sanctioned by the City.
These workers are your neighbours, your friends and your family members, they have families, some are single mothers and fathers and they to pay taxes and are part of this community. Many are long time employees of the City, and they deserve more from both the City and the CRD, than to be used as pawns in a political battle.
The wages paid to these workers are spent here in Quesnel, on vehicles, houses, groceries, fuel, entertainment and many other things. These wages help support our local businesses to the tune of 1.7 million dollars.
